FAQ

Kids & Art is able to make a positive impact on the lives of families facing childhood cancer because of the input, commitment, and generosity of our community. Through the years we’ve learned that there are different questions about our programs based on the needs and perspectives of community members. We’ve outlined some of the most common below, but are always available to answer your questions directly as needed. Just let us know!

Youth (Kids/Teens/AYA)

I want to go to an online art workshop but I don’t feel comfortable showing myself, can I participate with my screen off?

Yes, we understand that sometimes patients don’t feel up to actively participating in our online workshops so it is fine to participate with your screen off. If you have questions, you can type them into the workshop chat. Remember, you will need to sign up ahead of time to get the workshop link.

I have a really good idea for an art workshop, can I let you know about it?

Yes, please do, we love to create art experiences based on participant interests. Please contact us at programs@kidsandart.org and we can set up a time to chat.

Parents/Caregivers

My son was recently diagnosed with cancer and he has three siblings ages 3 years to 26 years, can they participate in your programs?

Yes, siblings are an integral part of our program. Let us know when you register for any of our workshops and our program manager will reach out to you if they need more clarifications.

Are your workshops open to kids dealing with anything other than cancer?

Currently all our destinations and online workshops are open for families touched by cancer and other critical medical conditions. Please note, the Artist-in-Residence program is based on a particular hospital/care center's patient population.

How do you ensure a safe space for my children in your workshops?

Our goal with the workshops is to build community whether it is online or in person. We have many caregivers on our team and the Board and thanks to them our team artists and volunteers are trained on the nuances of the diagnoses, side effects, challenges, and do’s and don’ts.

What do you do with photographs that you take during workshops?

We have a media release form that all our parents, volunteers, and artists sign. Photographs from workshops help us create positive testimonials to share with our donors. Since all our workshops are free and paid for by grants, corporations, or individual donors, photographs help us make a case for funding.

I have a 15-year-old daughter with cancer, will she be the oldest to participate in online workshops?

Our patient, survivor, and sibling participants range in age from 4 to 34. Sometimes younger siblings join us, as well as older family members. We welcome all ages!

Healthcare Professionals

I am interested in your Amaeyzing ArtKits program but I see that the 2023 grant is full for the year. Can I still get Amaezying ArtKits for my patients?

Yes, Amaeyzing ArtKits can be purchased at a reduced facility rate. Please contact us at programs@kidsandart.org for more information.

Is the Amaeyzing ArtKits grant program free for care centers?

Once we receive your application we look at our allocations and funding and based on that we assign a certain number of free ArtKits to each care center. If you need more than the allocated number you can pay a discounted care center rate.

How do we give our patient families access to all your programs?

Our Program Manager is your main contact. Reach out and let them know how they can best support you and your patient families. We have online art workshops, hands-on in person art workshops for Bay Area patients, @Home ArtKits for patients in active treatment, and a referral-based program for families in hospice and in bereavement.

We have a few Adolescent and Young Adult patients (AYA), do you have a program to support them?

Yes we have AYA specific ArtKits which your carencenter can purchase from us at a care center discounted price. The ArtKits are created by our artist with the age group in mind.

Artists

Can I post my artist bio on your Artists section of the website?

Yes. Artists volunteering with Kids & Art can send a bio with a few photos showing examples of their work, and we will post it on our Artists page.

Can I donate a piece of art for your Auction?

Yes, thank you for offering to do so. Please email us at programs@kidsandart.org.

I don’t live in the Bay Area, is it still possible to volunteer as an artist with Kids & Art?

Yes, artist participation in our Online Art Experiences and @Home Amaeyzing ArtKits programs is virtual. Please contact us at programs@kidsandart.org for more information.

Volunteers

Do volunteers need any special authorizations (fingerprinting to work with kids, TB test, etc.)

Yes, we expect all our volunteers to clear a background check which we conduct through Checkr (only require your personal information - name, address and SSN). For volunteers who will be working directly with children, we also require proof of Covid vaccination.

My 10-year-old is a gifted artist, can she lead a workshop with children with cancer?

Volunteers who work directly with patients must be at least 18-years-old. We would be happy to discuss other ways to get her involved, including organizing a fundraising event or securing donations of unopened art supplies. Please contact us at volunteer@kidsandart.org for more information.

Donors

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, all donations to Kids & Art are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, as long as no goods or services were exchanged. Many employers offer workplace giving programs that can increase your gift to Kids & Art. In some cases, a matching gift could double the impact of your gift. We receive matching donations through programs like Benevity, Your Cause, and Bright Networks. Check this list of companies that have matching programs or with your human resources department to see if your company offers this benefit.

Can I make a donation in honor or memory of a family member or friend?
